Tips for Getting a Good Domain Name

1. The length of your domain name

You can have a maximum of 63 characters for your domain name. Many people would suggest keeping your domain short. By having a short domain name, users can easily remember your website and also it is easier for them to type in their browser. However, you should keep your domain name meaningful while keeping it short. It is hard to get a good and short domain name nowadays as most of those name were already taken up by the others.

Having your long domain name have its own advantages too. By having a longer domain name, it will help to increase your website traffic when the user query match the keyword in your domain name. Try to use keyword that people will normally type in your domain name and it will increase your website traffic.

So which one is better? Well, it is best if you can get a short meaningful domain name that is related to your content. You can also use a specific name of your company for your website, i.e. www.theAdam.com, but for small individual business, i suggest using longer and meaningful name with keyword to get higher traffic to your website. Don't go for name that is too long also.

2. Domain name extension (i.e .com)

Wondering which domain extension to be used .biz .net .org or .com? Well, just go ahead for .com as it is the most common extension people use and is reliable for search engine. (you can protect your website by having multiple extensions direct to your main website to prevent traffic-stealing from others - some web host provide this service but may cost some money).

3. Hyphenated Name (i.e www.my-web-site.com)

When your domain name is longer than 3 words, except that the 3 words is very short, you can consider using hyphen in your domain name. The advantage of having hyphenated name is that, search engine can distinguish your keyword and drives you more traffic and you can still get the domain name you wanted if the non-hyphenated name has been taken by others.

But the disadvantage of having hyphen in your website is that the hyphen is easily forgotten when people trying to type your url in web browser, especially when your website is promoted from mouth to mouth through friends (i.e if your domain name is www.my-web-site.com, most people will type in www.mywebsite.com.) You should try to go for non-hyphenated name if possible, but ofcourse, it is totally depending on your case.
